Leith is one city outside of Edinburgh that is an easy drive by hire car. It is a charming working-class port town that has served Edinburgh as long as ships have been sailing up the Firth of Forth. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is located here and quite the popular stop for tourists. A trip by hire car to Lauriston Castle is also a popular destination, with its beautiful 30 acre grounds, plush interior, and 16th century tower house.
Alternatively, you can drive by hire car to Stirling, an historically important centre, is where the monument commemorating William Wallace is located.
