The city of Merida is about a five-hour drive by hire car. This town contains beautiful Spanish Baroque architecture and a lively central market where local Mayan women sell their wares. Closer than Merida is the cove of Xel-Ha or the ecological theme park Xcaret which are also worth a visit.
Alternatively, the spectacular Maya ruins at Tulum, Chichén-Itzá, and Cobá are within close driving distance and make spectacular hire car day trips.
